[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced on the 13th that it will verify the facts and potentially launch an investigation into recent allegations that Kakao Pay transferred customers' personal information to China's Alipay.
The PIPC plans to request data from Kakao Pay and other relevant companies to confirm whether they complied with obligations under the Personal Information Protection Act when transferring personal data abroad.
The decision on whether to initiate an investigation will be made after reviewing the submitted materials.
Earlier in the day, reports surfaced that Kakao Pay allegedly transferred personal credit information to Alipay, a subsidiary of China's fintech giant Ant Group. The Financial Supervisory Service pointed out that when providing payment services on Apple's App Store, Kakao Pay shared customer data with affiliated payment companies without obtaining the necessary customer consent.
