[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) announced on the 15th that it has recently signed a contract with a European shipping company to build twelve 15,500 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ships. The total contract value is approximately KRW 3.6832 trillion.

The twelve container ships ordered will be built by HD KSOE's subsidiaries, with six ships each being constructed at Ulsan's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Jeollanam-do's HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. These ships are scheduled to be delivered sequentially to the shipowner by June 2028.

HD KSOE will equip these vessels with eco-friendly technologies, including dual-fuel LNG (liquefied natural gas) engines and waste heat recovery systems. The waste heat recovery system recycles the heat generated by the engine as an energy source.

Industry analysts suggest that the increase in international trade volume and external uncertainties have led to a rise in maritime cargo traffic, driving a steady increase in container shipping rates. According to the shipbuilding industry, the average newbuilding price for LNG dual-fuel container ships (15,000 TEU class) has risen by 15.8%, from USD 190 million in July last year to the current level of USD 220 million.

With this contract, HD KSOE has secured a total of 144 orders (including one offshore unit) this year. In terms of value, the orders amount to USD 16.27 billion, exceeding the annual order target of USD 13.5 billion by 20.5%.
