[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Seoul, South Korea – May 25, 2025 – The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced its intent to take strict measures in response to the recent SK Telecom (SKT) customer data breach.
The PIPC, in cooperation with the Korea Chief Privacy Officers Council, recently held a joint policy forum to address the incident. The forum, titled “Strengthening Personal Data Safety Management Systems and Strategies for Privacy Policy Evaluation,” brought together government officials and privacy officers from major industries to explore solutions for enhancing personal data protection.
In his opening remarks, Ko Hak-soo, Chairperson of the PIPC, stated, “We will thoroughly investigate the root cause of this incident and impose strong sanctions for any violations of the law. At the same time, we will swiftly implement policies aimed at strengthening our continuous preventive systems.”
Speaking with reporters, Chairperson Ko also addressed the suspected cyberattack behind the breach. He noted, “There is evidence that the data stored in the Home Subscriber Server (HSS) was accessed via the billing information management server (WCDR) and transferred to an IP address in Singapore.
However, it remains unclear who owns or controls this IP address.” This marks the first official confirmation that personal data of approximately 27 million SK Telecom subscribers was transmitted overseas to Singapore.
