[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Apple has filed a lawsuit against the European Commission over its order to enhance interoperability between Apple devices and third-party products, as required by the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets on June 2 (local time), Apple submitted the legal complaint to the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg on May 30.

This legal action follows the European Commission’s directive issued in March, which mandates Apple to make its devices—including iPhones and iPads—more interoperable with competing products. The Commission stated that greater interoperability would foster a more open environment for developers, provide more choices for European consumers, and encourage innovation.

In response, Apple issued a statement calling the EU’s demand “unfair, burdensome, and innovation-stifling.” The company warned that compliance would require sharing sensitive data with rivals, thereby jeopardizing user privacy and security.

Apple added,

“Targeting Apple alone with such fundamentally flawed regulations will severely limit our ability to deliver innovative products and features in Europe. Ultimately, it will result in a degraded user experience for European customers.”

Legal experts expect the lawsuit to take several years to resolve. Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Apple is still required to comply with the EU order during the proceedings.

Under the DMA, if a company is found to be in violation, the EU may impose fines of up to 10% of its global annual revenue or even mandate structural remedies, including the breakup of business segments.
