[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 15th of the month, the Hanwha Ocean union initiated protests in front of Chairman Kim Seung-yeon's residence as part of their negotiations for wage and collective bargaining agreements (CBA). The union also conducted a 7-hour strike at their Geoje plant on the same day.
According to sources in the shipbuilding industry, the National Metal Workers' Union Daewoo Shipbuilding Branch (Hanwha Ocean union) held a picket protest in front of Chairman Kim's residence located in Gahoe-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Additionally, the union was observed conducting a solitary protest in front of the Hanwha Group headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul.
Earlier, the union claimed that Hanwha Group had promised equivalent wages and benefits to all employees of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now Hanwha Ocean) during its acquisition last year, including a 300% base wage in Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), but alleged that these promises have not been fulfilled.
The union exercised its right to strike from 9 AM to 5 PM on the same day. Hanwha Ocean union secured the right to negotiate with an 86% approval from union members during a temporary general meeting held from the 8th to the 9th of this month.
The union began negotiations with management at the end of May, starting with preliminary discussions for the CBA. However, due to sluggish progress in negotiations, some union members proceeded with warning strikes.
