[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hanwha Systems announced on June 23 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with U.S. defense giant Northrop Grumman to collaborate on integrated air defense system technologies. The two companies aim to combine their respective strengths in radar and air defense command-and-control systems to jointly develop advanced, high-performance air defense capabilities.

With the rising prominence of aerial threats—such as ballistic missiles, artillery, and drones—in conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and ongoing Middle East tensions, countries are ramping up efforts to deploy more effective and sophisticated defense solutions.

Northrop Grumman is a global leader in Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) technology, which connects a wide range of sensors and interceptors across air, land, and sea to detect and neutralize aerial threats quickly and accurately. IBCS enhances operational efficiency by enabling seamless data sharing regardless of weapon system type and by autonomously selecting the optimal interceptor.

IBCS is currently being deployed in the U.S. and Europe, with expansion to other regions under consideration. The new partnership with Hanwha Systems is expected to strengthen global supply chains and contribute to Korea’s growing defense technology capabilities.
