[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LS Cable & System has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Norway’s state-owned energy company, Equinor, to collaborate on the "Firefly Floating Offshore Wind Project" in Ulsan, South Korea.

The MOU signing took place at the BIXPO 2024 event at the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju on November 6.

The Firefly project represents South Korea's first large-scale floating offshore wind farm, with Equinor planning to establish a 750 MW capacity facility by 2030, located approximately 70 km off the coast of Ulsan. Unlike fixed-bottom wind farms, floating offshore wind installations involve turbines mounted on floating structures, making it possible to operate in deeper waters where traditional anchoring methods aren’t feasible.

In support of this emerging market, LS Cable & System has developed South Korea's first dynamic subsea cables specifically for floating offshore wind, designed to withstand harsh marine environments. This technology has achieved international certification, demonstrating its durability and reliability in offshore applications.
