[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] An Asiana Airlines flight bound for Istanbul experienced a significant delay after a fuel leak was discovered, prompting a last-minute aircraft replacement.
According to reports from the aviation industry on Saturday, the incident occurred the previous day at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Flight OZ551, which was preparing for takeoff at Incheon International Airport. Fuel was seen spilling from a wing-side fuel tank of the aircraft, a Boeing B777-200 carrying 283 passengers. The aircraft was already positioned on the runway.
Asiana Airlines deployed a replacement aircraft, delaying the flight by 3 hours and 45 minutes. The flight eventually departed at 1:20 p.m. To mitigate passenger inconvenience, the airline provided meal vouchers and additional Asiana Airlines travel vouchers.
The airline issued a statement apologizing to passengers, emphasizing that the decision was made to ensure safety:
"We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to our passengers and ask for your understanding regarding this necessary safety measure."
This incident highlights the importance of stringent pre-flight inspections and the airline's commitment to prioritizing passenger safety.
