[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI is on the verge of securing a contract worth approximately 1 trillion KRW (about $760 million) to supply energy storage system (ESS) batteries.

According to industry sources on the 4th, Samsung SDI is set to finalize a deal with NextEra Energy, the largest power company in the United States, to supply 6.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of ESS batteries.

The main product involved in this contract is the Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.5, which uses nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery cells. The SBB 1.5 has enhanced internal space efficiency, allowing it to store a larger amount of batteries, achieving a total capacity of 5.26 megawatt-hours (MWh). This new design increases the energy density per container by approximately 37% compared to previous models.

The ESS market is considered to have significant growth potential alongside the expansion of renewable energy. According to market research firm SNE Research, the ESS market size is expected to grow by 27% year-on-year to reach $40 billion (approximately 54.72 trillion KRW) this year and is projected to reach $80 billion (approximately 109.42 trillion KRW) by 2035.

A Samsung SDI representative commented, "Details related to our customers are not confirmed matters."
