[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Naver and Kakao's new hiring numbers have plummeted to less than half compared to the previous year.
According to industry sources on the 1st, Naver and Kakao hired 683 new employees last year, which is less than half of the 1,469 hired the previous year.
This hiring decline has continued for two consecutive years. Naver hired 838 new employees in 2021, but only 599 in 2022. Last year, the number further dropped to 231. Similarly, Kakao's hiring decreased from 994 in 2021 to 870 in 2022, and sharply declined to 452 last year, effectively halving in two years.
The total number of employees also decreased. Last year, the total number of employees at Naver and Kakao was 8,297, down 6.4% from 8,864 the previous year. Naver's workforce decreased by 546 (11%) to 4,417, while Kakao's decreased by 21 (0.5%) to 3,880.
This is the first time since 2019 that the number of employees at Naver and Kakao has decreased. The reduction is six times that of four years ago. This decline is likely due to the combination of employee transfers to affiliates and continuous reductions in hiring.
Naver and Kakao plan to secure new growth drivers by investing in new businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI) in addition to their existing businesses like commerce and advertising.
