[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Doosan Enerbility announced plans to increase its annual gas turbine production capacity from six units to eight, with potential future expansion to up to 20 units depending on order volumes from AI data center-related demand. The announcement was made during a recent corporate briefing with industry analysts, according to sources on May 20.

The company is also considering expanding its small modular reactor (SMR) production capabilities. Currently, Doosan Enerbility can manufacture eight SMR modules within its nuclear facility. The company plans to build a dedicated plant that would allow for a maximum production capacity of 20 modules.

Doosan estimates that the total investment required for this expansion will amount to approximately KRW 1.3 trillion. While the company had previously committed to investing KRW 700 billion in its nuclear and gas businesses over the next three years, the rising need for facility upgrades has led to an additional KRW 600 billion investment plan. To fund the expansion, the company is expected to secure capital through the sale of coal-related assets, in line with its carbon-neutral strategy.

The accelerated push for increased production comes amid growing order potential from the North American market. In particular, major U.S. tech companies are expected to drive demand for gas turbines to support the power needs of their expanding AI data centers. These companies typically require power infrastructure capable of generating three to four times the actual power needs of the data centers to ensure a stable electricity supply.

With the production capacity of existing large gas turbine suppliers such as General Electric (GE) and Siemens nearing saturation, big tech firms are actively considering Doosan Enerbility’s gas turbines as a viable alternative for their upcoming projects.
