[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] According to industry sources on the 22nd, Hyundai Rotem and Downer, an Australian local transportation company, were recently selected as the preferred bidder for a $7.1 billion (about 6.33 trillion won) railway project underway by the state government in Queensland, Australia.
Downer is participating in the project in the form of a consortium with Hyundai Rotem. Currently, Hyundai Rotem and Downer are negotiating for a train production contract, and if the final contract is signed, they will be in charge of the production of trains for the project.
If Hyundai Rotem wins the project, the amount will be less than the total size of the project, but it is expected to reach trillions of won. An official from Hyundai Rotem said, "We have been selected as the preferred bidder and are currently negotiating for details. The specific amount of orders has not been decided."
In 2016, Hyundai Rotem won an order to deliver 512 two-story trains worth 889.4 billion won in Sydney, Australia. In 2019, it signed an additional business contract worth 82.6 billion won to supply an additional 42 trains to the same area.
