[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Kakao recently filed a complaint with the police against a company that was suspected of leaking and trading user personal information in an open chat room.
According to Kakao on the 16th, it filed a complaint with Seongnam Bundang Police Station the previous day asking for an investigation into company A on charges of obstruction of business. Kakao said, "We will try to respond strongly to illegal activities so that users can feel safe."
Earlier this month, a company's advertisement was posted on a site that deals with online marketing programs saying that it would extract information such as real names and phone numbers of KakaoTalk open chat room participants. Kakao is in the position of "technically impossible" regarding the suspicion that personal information was leaked through an open chat room security vulnerability.
Kakao claimed that although the participant's "user ID" has been leaked in some chat rooms, the user ID is a serial number used in the chat room, which is different from the KakaoTalk ID, and it is impossible to backtrack it to check the phone number and the contents of the conversation.
