[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] L&F will build a new high-nickel cathode material plant in Daegu, which will be used for 1 million electric vehicles.
high-nickel cathode material is a key material for high-performance electric vehicle batteries. L&F signed a contract with Tesla last month to supply high-nickel cathode materials worth 3.8 trillion won.
L&F announced on the 26th that it plans to complete the 3rd cathode material plant in the 2nd National Industrial Complex in Guji-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu in July. Factory buildings, quality buildings, and dormitories will be built on 99,378㎡ (about 30,000 pyeong) of land. The total investment cost is 650 billion won.
The new plant is being promoted as L&F's largest high-nickel cathode material plant. The production capacity is 100,000 tons per year. It is enough to fit into one million pure electric vehicles. It is the largest single production standard ever, more than Daegu Plant 1 (20,000 tons), Guji Plant 1 (40,000 tons) and Plant 2 (70,000 tons). After completion in July, the company plans to start operating some lines and start full-scale production and sales in 2024.
The company has decided to produce high-nickel cathode materials that have increased nickel content to 90% at its third plant. Cathode materials are a key material that accounts for 40% of battery manufacturing prices. Demand for high-nickel cathode materials that will increase mileage and charging performance in the global electric vehicle market is soaring.
