[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solutions will invest 600 billion won in Ochang plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, to build a facility to verify the pilot production and mass production of next-generation batteries.
LG Energy Solutions announced on the 25th that it will invest 600 billion won in 'Ochang Energy Plant' to build a 'mother line'. Motherline is a factory that enables not only test production of products applied with next-generation design and process technology but also mass-production verification. It is a step further from the 'Pilot Line' where only test production is possible.
The LG Energy Solution plans to carry out pilot production and mass production of the 'pouch long cell battery' in its new mother line and expand it to global production lines. The goal is to be completed in December 2024. Pouch Long Cell Battery is a next-generation battery that has improved energy density and mileage by more than 20% compared to existing products.
With the rapid growth of the global electric vehicle market centered on the North American market, demand for various prototypes and production by automakers is gradually increasing. LG Energy Solution's pouch long cell battery is also one of the representative products that require a large supply of prototypes, and demands for pilot production and mass production verification are increasing.
The LG Energy Solution Ochang Energy Plant serves as a 'mother factory' for battery production plants operating around the world, including North America, Europe and Asia. The investment is also a strategic decision to make Ochang energy plant a center of research and development (R&D) and manufacturing, the company explained. LG Energy Solution has invested 580 billion won since June last year to build a mother line for cylindrical batteries. Verification of next-generation core products is all taking place in Ochang.
