[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] SK Telecom posted positive results in the first quarter of this year on the back of its new business performance.

SK Telecom announced on the 10th that its consolidated operating profit in the first quarter of this year was estimated at 494.8 billion won, up 14.4% from the same period last year. Sales rose 2.2 percent from a year ago to 4.3722 trillion won and net profit jumped 37.3 percent to 302.5 billion won. The operating profit of its subsidiary SK Broadband was 76.1 billion won, up 0.1 percent from a year earlier, and sales rose 3.5 percent to 1.615 trillion won.

SK Telecom said new business areas such as media, data centers, and enterprises centered on the cloud led the first quarter's positive performance. In terms of detailed sales, the media sector rose more than 10% year-on-year to 393.2 billion won, while the enterprise rose 5.8% to 386.2 billion won. SK Telecom said sales in both the data center and cloud sectors showed rapid growth of more than 20%, and the artificial intelligence (AI) contact center (AICC) sector, which started its business last year, won the largest order in the first quarter.

The subscription service "T Universe" achieved more than 1.8 million monthly active users in the first quarter, and the metaverse platform "Ifland," which was launched in 49 countries last year, also attracted more than 10% of its monthly active users in the first quarter. SK Telecom plans to accelerate growth by strengthening content markets based on in-app payments during the second half of the year.

As of the end of the first quarter, the number of 5G subscribers stood at 14.15 million, exceeding 60% of all customers. SK Telecom plans to launch a '0 Youth Plan' next month that adds youth-specific benefits. As of the end of the first quarter, Wired had 9.4 million paid broadcasting subscribers and 6.76 million high-speed Internet subscribers.

Thanks to this positive performance, SK Telecom is pushing ahead with the transition and leap forward to 'AI Company' this year. Using the AI services and technical capabilities accumulated over the years, the strategy is to implement an 'AI everywhere' strategy that leads innovation around five major areas: Customer, Technology, Time and Space, Industry (AIX), Core Business Model (Core BM) and ESG (Environment, Society and Governance).
