[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HMM, which has begun a full-fledged sale process, is diversifying its business portfolio, moving away from its container ship-oriented sales structure. In particular, the sales portion of the bulk cargo transportation sector has been greatly expanded and the share of the American route has been expanded.
According to a business report by HMM on the 17th, HMM has increased sales in the bulk freight transportation sector by more than 30 percentage points (p) over the past year.
Sales in the bulk cargo transportation sector stood at 285.368 billion won in the first quarter of last year, up 36.5 percent from 209.029 billion won in the first quarter of last year.
The bulk freight transportation sector also accounted for an increase in total sales over the same period.
Sales in the bulk cargo transportation sector, which stood at 4.25 percent in the first quarter of last year, rose to 13.71 percent in the first quarter of this year. During the same period, the number of bulk carriers owned also doubled from 10 to 19.
The market share of the Asia-America West Coast route is also increasing.
The market share, which was 5% in 2022, increased to 5.4% in the first quarter of this year. The share of the Americas-Asia route, which stood at 7.5% in 2022, has increased to 8.2% as of February this year.
Currently, the HMM's ransom is estimated at up to 10 trillion won, but Hyundai Motor Group and POSCO Group, which were strong candidates for the acquisition, have drawn the line that they are not willing to take over. LX Group is also known to be difficult to afford the ransom of HMM amounting to 10 trillion won.
