[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Chem is planning to expand to preoccupy the carbon nanotube (CNT) market, which is attracting attention as a material for battery and semiconductor processes. Once the expansion is completed, LG Chem's CNT production capacity will more than double.

The LG Chem announced on the 31st that it has started construction of its CNT 4 plant in Daesan, South Chungcheong Province. The target period for operation is 2025.

Once the plant is completed, LG Chem's CNT production capacity will be expanded to a total of 6,100 tons, more than double the current capacity. LG Chem's CNT 3 plant (1,200 tons), which LG Chem expanded in Yeosu, has recently begun full-scale operation, with LG Chem's CNT production capacity totaling 2,900 tons.

CNT is a next-generation material whose electricity and thermal conductivity are equal to copper and diamonds and its strength is 100 times that of steel. The range of applications such as electric vehicle batteries, semiconductor trays, and automotive electrostatic external materials is also infinite.
