[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Mobis' Indonesian plant began construction in the first half of next year with the aim of mass production.
Hyundai Mobis made an announcement on the 1st (local time) that it held a ground-breaking ceremony for a battery system plant at a factory site located in Bekasi, Jawabarat Province, just outside Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 31st (local time). About 150 people attended the ground-breaking ceremony, including government and industry officials, including Governor Mohammad Lidwan Camille, South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Lee Sang-duk and Oh Heung-sup, executive director of Hyundai Mobis Jeon Dong-hwa BU.
Hyundai Mobis has used its battery system plant in Indonesia as a base for powering the ASEAN market. This is because the Indonesian government is speeding up its efforts to secure leadership in electric vehicles based on abundant natural resources. The purchasing power of electric vehicles in the ASEAN region is also on the rise, especially in Indonesia.
Hyundai Mobis receives battery cells from HLI Green Power, a battery cell joint venture of Hyundai Motor Group, assembles controllers and heat management devices into modules and supplies them to finished car manufacturers in the form of a large battery system.
Hyundai Motor Group will invest a total of $ 60 million (about 80 billion won) in its Indonesian plant to build a 33,000㎡ (about 10,000 pyeong) plant. It will first supply battery systems to major Southeast Asian electric vehicle models to be launched next year, and will produce both air-speed and general battery systems equipped with large-capacity cells.
