The endless struggle between Coupang and CJ... Seemingly still an “important partner

[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The war of nerves between Coupang and CJ CheilJedang, which began in November last year, has made little progress. On the contrary, Coupang emphasizes the surge in sales of CJ's "Hatban" alternative products, while CJ CheilJedang will join hands with its Coupang competitors to strengthen its "anti-Coupang solidarity." The two companies say there is room for negotiations, but in fact, they have failed to narrow differences in delivery prices and are "finding their own way."

According to the industry on the 13th, CJ CheilJedang products such as Hetbahn and Bibigo cannot be used as 'rocket delivery' in Coupang. The situation has been maintained for more than half a year since Coupang stopped ordering major products from CJ CheilJedang because it failed to reach an agreement on the delivery price. They are still blaming each other for the background of the suspension of orders.

Coupang and CJ CheilJedang still refer to each other as "important partners" and are in negotiations over a direction where they can win-win each other. Although the conflict between the two companies has entered a prolonged phase, they have conveyed to each other that there is still room for negotiation.

However, Coupang and CJ CheilJedang are each trying to find an alternative. CJ CheilJedang is focusing on securing distribution channels that can replace Coupang by strengthening various partnerships, and Coupang also countered by saying that it has enough substitutes even without CJ CheilJedang's representative products such as Hetban.

Coupang said that according to an analysis of food sales between January and May this year, instant rice products from medium-sized companies grew by up to 50 times and products from small and medium-sized companies grew by up to 100 times. Instant noodles and frozen dumplings made by small and medium-sized companies also recorded sales growth of more than 60% over the same period, it added.
