[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung C&T is promoting the Romanian Small Module Reactor (SMR) project with global nuclear power companies.

This is the first time that a Korean construction company has participated in a specific project related to SMR. Samsung C&T plans to use this project as a stepping stone to speed up the global expansion of the next-generation nuclear power plant business.

The construction division of Samsung C&T announced on the 14th that it had signed an MOU with the Nuclear Power Corporation of Romania, NuScale Power, E-Infra, Nova Power & Gas, and Flower of the United States to jointly promote a project to build an SMR in Romania. Top executives from each company attended the agreement ceremony, and they decided to join forces throughout the entire process, from Romanian SMR business planning to licensing, design, EPC execution, and financing.

Romania is currently implementing a project to replace thermal power plants located in the Deutschesti region with SMRs based on the technology of NuScale, a world-renowned SMR company, and to operate them from 2029. Samsung C&T plans to cooperate in all processes from SMR project development to construction, including EPC, starting with participation in basic design.

Furthermore, the six companies are actively cooperating to expand SMR business based on NuScale technology in Europe, centering on Romania. SMR, which is evaluated as a next-generation eco-friendly energy source, is smaller in size than existing nuclear power plants, is safe, has almost no carbon emission, and has the advantage of a short construction period, so demand has recently increased significantly.
