[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] A product that was not even bought at an E-Mart 24 completely unmanned store in Starfield COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, was paid with a card, and even three days later, the company suddenly received a text message approving credit card payment. The store opened in September 2021, raising the possibility of personal information leakage as well as errors in the payment system.
An informant A, who asked for anonymity, said, "I bought snacks with children at E-Mart 24 COEX store before going to the COEX Aquarium on the 15th, and registered my personal information, card number and password on a kiosk machine that issued QR code at the time," adding, "I have never visited COEX today (18th) morning, but I received a credit card approval message from the same store."
"There was no way to contact him because it was an unmanned store, so I contacted the card company to report the stolen personal information and handled the card loss," he said. "The approval was canceled only after the accident investigation on the card approval on the day of use was completed."
A said, "I am very unpleasant and anxious that my personal information and credit card payment information are not protected at large companies such as E-Mart 24."
In response, E-Mart 24 said it is currently checking the circumstances and causes of the accident. "It is a matter to look at whether it is simply a system error or caused by intentional information theft," said an official from the Cyberterrorism Response Division of the National Police Agency. "If card information and personal information are intentionally captured and used again for payment, it is a clear leakage of personal information."
E-Mart 24 has devised a hybrid system to increase additional sales of franchises that close late at night and has been in full swing since July 2021. The number of hybrid stores increased from 85 in 2019 to 1,680 in the first quarter of this year.
