[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] It was confirmed on the 25th that the fine of 8 billion rubles(about 113 billion won) that Korean Air was imposed by the Russian customs authorities last year was cut in half by the local court's first trial ruling.

Korean Air said it would appeal against it.

According to the airline industry, the Russian commercial court, which took charge of the first trial, recently ruled that Korean Air should pay a fine of 4.15 billion rubles (about 59 billion won) to Russian customs authorities.

Korean Air was previously fined a year after a cargo plane (KE529) leaving Incheon International Airport on Feb. 22, 2021, for Frankfurt, Germany, via Moscow, took off without receiving an official seal from the Moscow Airport Customs.

Korean Air filed a formal lawsuit, calling such a measure an excessive and harsh level of sanctions that applied the law excessively.

At that time, the aviation industry interpreted that the imposition of large fines was not unrelated to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Another reason was that the fine was imposed on February 24 last year, the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

Korean Air will appeal against the results of the first trial. He says it is hard to understand that he imposed a large fine even though he went through all the procedures in accordance with Russian law at the time and explained the relevant facts several times.
