[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] OCI announced on the 26th that it has signed a long-term supply contract with Nexeon of the UK for key raw materials required for the production of silicon anode materials for secondary batteries.
OCI will supply Nexeon with silicon anode material (SiH4) for five years from 2025. The initial long-term supply contract between the two companies is worth 55 million dollars (about 70 billion won). The size of the contract is expected to increase as the customer's production volume increases.
OCI plans to establish a special material factory for silicon anode materials with an annual capacity of 1,000 tons by utilizing idle land at the Gunsan plant, which is currently producing polysilicon and phosphoric acid for semiconductors. The goal is to start construction within this year and start commercial production in the first half of 2025. Production will proceed according to customer demand.
Nexeon, a company that holds more than 170 major patents related to silicon anode materials for secondary batteries, recently signed a long-term supply contract with Panasonic, the world's fourth-largest electric vehicle (EV) cell manufacturer, to expand its production capacity.
OCI plans to connect raw materials for next-generation silicon anode materials with pipes and supply them directly to Nexeon's silicon anode material production plant. In the future, it plans to pursue additional capacity expansion according to the market growth and customer demand.
In particular, the materials for silicon anode materials that OCI plans to produce are expected to have an edge in cost competitiveness because they use raw materials produced during the manufacturing process of polysilicon for semiconductors at the Gunsan Plant as raw materials.
Starting with the supply of raw materials for silicon anode materials, OCI plans to actively develop next-generation silicon anode materials and semiconductor materials in the future to become a leading company in secondary battery and semiconductor materials.
Meanwhile, OCI announced on the same day that its operating profit for the second quarter on a consolidated basis recorded 17.333 billion won.
Sales were 344.26 billion won and net profit was 16.6 billion won. OCI is a newly established corporation on May 2 of this year, and this year's performance is for two months from May to June.
