Over seven years, the financial sector embezzled over 180 billion won

[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The embezzlement amounted to 181.6 billion won over the past seven years, but the recovery rate was only in the 10% range.

From 2017 to July this year, the number of employees embezzled by financial companies was 202. In particular, they embezzled KRW 181.659 billion.

The amount of embezzlement was 8.987 billion won (45 people) in 2017, 5.66 billion won (37 people) in 2018, 8.4587 billion won (27 people) in 2019, 2.0829 billion won (31 people) in 2020, 15.686 billion won (20 people) in 2021, 82.682 billion won (30 people) in 2022, and 58.076 billion won (12 people) this year.

The amount of embezzlement increased sharply last year and this year, due to the embezzlement of 70 billion won by Woori Bank employees last year and the recent embezzlement of 50 billion won by BNK Kyongnam Bank.

Banks (113 employees) had the largest number of embezzled executives and employees by industry. It was followed by insurance (59 people), securities (15 people), savings banks (11 people), and cards (4 people).

The bank was also the largest in embezzlement. The amount of embezzlement from the bank was 150.98 billion won, accounting for 83.1% of the total embezzlement. Savings banks (KRW 16.92 billion) accounted for 9.3%, securities (KRW 8.696 billion) 4.8%, insurance (KRW 4.742 billion) 2.6%, and credit cards (KRW 266 million) 0.2%.

Amid the recent surge in embezzlement cases in the financial sector, the recovery has not been carried out properly, a report showed.

Of the embezzlement over the past seven years, 22.4672 billion won has been recovered. This was only a 12.4% recovery rate.
