[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI is planning to secure natural graphite cathode active material (anode material) in North America. It is interpreted as a measure to reduce China's dependence on core raw materials and respond to the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

According to the industry on the 9th, Samsung SDI signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to receive cathode materials from the Louisiana plant of Australian graphite company Syrah Resources. With this MOU, Samsung SDI will continue to demonstrate the installation of Syrah Resources cathode materials in its batteries until July next year. If it is judged to be suitable, it plans to receive up to 10,000 tons of cathode materials annually from 2026. The two companies will sign a formal contract after the empirical evaluation.

Samsung SDI appears to have joined hands with Syrah Resources to counter IRA's Advanced Manufacturing Tax Credit (AMPC).

Syrah Resources has joined hands with all three domestic battery companies through this MOU. Syrah Resources signed an MOU with SK On and Ford in July last year.
In October last year, it also signed an MOU with LG Energy Solutions (373220) to supply natural graphite.
