[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The Supreme Court has upheld the prison term for former Ecopro Group Chairman Lee Dong-chae, who is accused of taking 1.1 billion won in unfair profits using undisclosed information from his company.
The first division of the Supreme Court (Supreme Court Justice Oh Kyung-mi) on the 18th upheld the original ruling that ordered two years in prison, a fine of 2.2 billion won and 1.1 billion won in the appeal of former chairman Lee, who was indicted on charges of violating the Capital Market and Financial Investment Business Act.
The former chairman Lee is suspected of making a profit of 1.1 billion won by buying and reselling shares before uploading the supply contract information of EcoproBM, a manufacturer of anode materials, to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system between 2020 and 2021.
He was found to have used undisclosed information in the process and used borrowed-name securities accounts in the process of buying and selling stocks.
In October last year, the Seoul Southern District Court, which was in charge of the first trial, sentenced Lee to three years in prison, suspended for five years, and a fine of 3.5 billion won, but both the prosecutor and the former chairman appealed.
During the appeals trial, former chairman Lee reportedly claimed unfair sentencing, which the second trial refused to accept and sentenced him to two years in prison and a fine of 2.2 billion won.
