[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Hansol Paper announced on the 30th that it does not use PFAS for its paper straw products related to the fact that "PFAS (perfluorinated compound), a harmful substance, is used in the waterproof coating of paper straws."

Earlier, some cited a study by Belgian researchers and reported that PFAS ingredients were detected in paper straw products distributed in Belgium because the material was used for waterproof coating.

However, it was reported that the researchers did not address in the study whether the PFAS contained in straws actually melts in drinks, and that the harm to the human body of such straws will be limited as the accumulation of PFAS is low and most people only use straws from time to time.

Hansol Paper has been aware of concerns about PFAS for years and has emphasized that it does not use PFAS in the manufacturing process of its general paper, food paper and paper straws.

Hansol Paper uses water-resistant acrylic coatings that are harmless to the human body for paper straw products and other water-resistant coatings.

Meanwhile, Hansol Paper said it received test results from an official body in May this year that no PFAS was detected in connection with the Terravas water-based coating solution, which is being applied to its paper straws, cups and paper containers.
