[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] China has reportedly banned government officials from using electronic devices such as smartphones from Apple and other foreign brands for business purposes or bringing them to offices.

China's guidelines come amid China's attempt to limit the flow of sensitive information outside its borders, which is seen as an attempt to reduce its dependence on foreign technologies and enhance cybersecurity.

China's move is expected to affect smartphone sales by foreign brands in China, including Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy. In particular, Apple dominates China's top smartphone market, with about 19 percent of its total sales taking place in China.

Apple shares plunged 3.6% on the day, marking the worst return on the Dow Jones index.
