[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Gyeongju City, along with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, succeeded in attracting SK Ecoplant's secondary battery recycling plant.
Gyeongju City announced on the 10th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gyeongbuk Province on the 8th to establish a new SK Eco Plant secondary battery recycling plant.
About 20 people attended the meeting, including Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province Governor Lee Chul-woo, SK Eco Plant CEO Park Kyung-il and city and provincial councilors.
Through the MOU, SK Ecoplant announced its plan to invest a total of 330 billion won in Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju by 2028 to establish a secondary battery recycling plant and create about 300 new jobs.
At the new plant, SK Ecoplant, which is establishing its position as an environmental ・ energy company, will be Korea's first secondary battery recycling plant and will be an outpost to preoccupy domestic business and secure global leadership.
After the anode material scrap and use, the Gyeongju plant will have all processes of recycling by crushing secondary batteries, extracting black powder, and then extracting combustible metals such as nickel, manganese and lithium.
Starting with the plant, the company plans to establish a secondary battery value chain linking Pohang and Gyeongju in the future and realize a complete circulation system (Closed-Loop) that re-injects oil metals recovered from batteries into battery manufacturing.
