[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Recently, an internal employee of Nexon embezzled cash coupons again.
According to related industries on the 8th, A, who was a member of Nexon Games, was found to have made financial gains of 420 million won over the past three years by selling cash coupons provided by the online game 'Sudden Attack' to used trading sites.
The case was found inside Nexon three years after A stole more than 100 PIN numbers (personal identification numbers). After firing the employee, Nexon filed a criminal complaint in June last year on charges of professional malpractice.
Nexon has had two internal employee incidents that embezzled paid items and cash coupons in the game, including Counterside and Dungeon & Fighter. In particular, the Dungeon & Fighter case, in which the operator generated at least 50 million won worth of items and misappropriated them for cash, is still being talked about as an incident that has undermined the credibility of the game industry.
Nexon recorded annual sales of 353.7 billion yen (about 3.3946 trillion won), operating profit of 103.7 billion yen (about 995.2 billion won) and net profit of 10.3 billion yen (about 962.9 billion won) in 2022. Annual sales increased 29% year-on-year and operating profit increased 13%.
While Nexon's game division is making outward growth, there are doubts that the moral hazard of organizational culture is growing. The aforementioned incidents encourage such suspicion in that they have occurred in the game sector since CEO Lee took office in 2018. Some in the industry are even raising fundamental questions about Nexon's internal surveillance and control system.
