[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Labor authorities will conduct a full-scale supervision of all construction sites across the country within this month. This is because the fifth death has already occurred at Lotte Engineering & Construction's site since the enforcement of the Severe Disaster Punishment Act.
It is the second time since DL E&C (formerly Daelim Industrial) that authorities supervise all construction sites across the country.
In connection with the recent death at the site of a double-track train in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, the eighth-largest construction capacity company, the Ministry of Employment and Labor said on the 4th that it plans to supervise all sites across the country within October.
At the site of a double-track train in Gwangmyeong City of Lotte Engineering & Construction on Sept. 22, a worker who was working on a wire rope for mobile crane (100 tons) work at the top of the underground joint section crashed into an underground joint ditch 19 meters below along with the wire.
The accident is the fourth major disaster this year at the construction site of Lotte Engineering & Construction. Since the enforcement of the Severe Disaster Punishment Act on Jan. 27 last year, a total of five serious accidents have occurred at Lotte Engineering & Construction's construction site, killing five people.
Currently, the Ministry of Employment and Labor orders to suspend work at the Lotte Engineering & Construction site where the deaths occurred, and is investigating violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Disaster Punishment Act. The ministry also plans to supervise all construction sites across the country in the event of five deaths after the enforcement of the Serious Accident Punishment Act, considering the growing number of serious accidents at construction sites worth more than 5 billion won this year.
