[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Display and LG Chem have succeeded in localizing key materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that depend on imports.

According to LG Display on the 9th, both companies have developed their own OLED core material 'P-Dopant', which has been monopolized by foreign companies. Dopant is a compound added to the OLED luminous layer to increase device efficiency, color purity, and life expectancy. Among them, p-dopant plays an important role in improving OLED light emitting efficiency, extending device life, and reducing power consumption. However, due to the characteristics that easily deteriorate in the air, it was difficult to localize due to the high level of development difficulty.

The LG Display and LG Chem began joint research with the aim of localizing this material more than a decade ago and recently developed materials with the same efficiency and performance as existing imported materials. LG Display maximized synergy between the two companies by proposing material design and verifying performance and LG Chem taking charge of material synthesis and material production.

With the localization of P-Dopant, LG Display has secured the power to lead the global OLED market by establishing an independent and stable supply chain and securing its own patents. LG Display announced that the localization rate of OLED materials increased from 58% last year to 64% this year. LG Display plans to apply its proprietary p-dopant sequentially to large and small OLED panels in the future.
