[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] SKC is speeding up its business restructuring by cleaning up active mergers and acquisitions (M&A), investment and marginal industries.

According to the industry on the 16th, SKC has been carrying out large and small M&As since selling its industry material (film) business worth 1.6 trillion won last year.

SKC is a move to raise money and secure financial stability to expand investment in 'secondary batteries, semiconductors, and eco-friendly'. SKC entered the new business area by acquiring KCFT (currently SK Nexilis), which produces copper foil, an essential material for secondary batteries, for 1.2 trillion won in 2020.

The portion of secondary batteries and semiconductor materials in sales rose slightly from 28.6 percent in 2020 to 33.7 percent in 2021, before surpassing 40 percent with about 530 billion won out of 1.3 trillion won in total sales in the first half of this year. In particular, sales of secondary battery materials jumped 27.7% from 19.5% compared to 2021.

SKC completed the process of acquiring ISC, a semiconductor solution company, in October and invested a 12% stake in the semiconductor packaging company 'chiplet' in September. Last month, SKC invested 95 billion won in Halo, USA, a 'smart window' technology company that adjusts solar and solar heat transmittance, and is expanding its business to eco-friendly materials following secondary batteries and semiconductors.
