[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Asiana Airlines' labor union has launched a signature-collecting campaign against a business combination with Korean Air.
According to the industry on the 18th, Asiana Airlines' labor union has launched a signature-collecting campaign against the sale of Korean Air's cargo division to all its employees since the previous day. The period is until the 20th. The union plans to collect the results of the signature campaign and submit it to the board meeting to be held later this month.
The union's opposition to the merger with Korean Air is attributable to the news of the sale of the cargo business and the return of slots (the ability to allow aircraft to take off and land per hour). The move came as Korean Air pushed for the sale of Asiana Airlines' cargo division to pass the combined screening by the European Union (EU) executive committee and heard that it would transfer slots.
The labor union says that if this happens, it is difficult to expect synergy effects through mergers and acquisitions with Korean Air.
It remains to be seen whether the sale of Asiana Airlines' business division will take place. The sale of the cargo division requires approval from Asiana Airlines' board of directors. The sale can only be made if a majority of the board of directors, which consists of six members, is approved by at least four people.
