[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanwha Ocean has decided to win a contract to build the Navy's Ulsan-class frigate deployment (Batch)-Ⅲ 5 and 6.
Hanwha Ocean announced on the 12th that it has signed a total of 791.7 billion won worth of main contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the Ulsan-class frigate deployment-Ⅲ 5th and 6th ship construction project. This is the final project of the 'Ulsan-class deployment-Ⅲ' plan to replace the aging patrol ships and frigates of the South Korean Navy.
Earlier in July, Hanwha Ocean was selected as the preferred bidder for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration's Ulsan-class deployment-Ⅲ construction project of the 5th and 6th ships.
Ulsan-class deployment-Ⅲ frigate is 3,500 tons and has a hull length of 130 m. It can operate up to 30 knots (55㎞ per hour) and has anti-aircraft capability and antisubmarine detection function. It has a hybrid propulsion system that combines a medium- and low-speed electric propulsion system with a high-speed navigation gas turbine propulsion engine.
According to Hanwha Ocean, the No. 5 frigate will be delivered to the Navy in December 2027 and the No. 6 will be fully powered in June 2028.
Following the order for the frigate project, Hanwha Ocean aims to win a detailed design and leadership project for the "Mini Aegis" Korean next destroyer (KDDX), which is scheduled for bidding next year. The basic design order for KDDX is under way by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2020.
Hanwha Ocean is the only company that has built the entire lineup of KDX-Ⅰ·Ⅱ·Ⅲ, a high-tech domestic destroyer construction project that has introduced a new combat concept since 2000.
