[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Lotte Chemical has developed a separation film technology that can enhance the stability of lithium metal cathode materials used in next-generation semi-solid and all-solid lithium metal batteries. The functional material is applied to the separator to increase battery durability.
The separator is one of the four elements that make up the battery along with the cathode material, cathode material, electrolyte, etc.
Lotte Chemical announced on the 28th that it has developed the 'separation membrane coating material manufacturing technology' based on polymer-based solid electrolytes for the first time in Korea and has completed a patent application in Korea.
Lithium metal batteries replace graphite and silicon cathode materials of existing lithium-ion batteries with lithium (metal), which has excellent performance and stability. It has a larger energy capacity and smaller volume than lithium-ion batteries, which can drastically increase the mileage of electric vehicles, so it is also called a "dream battery" along with all-solid batteries.
The core of the separation membrane coating material manufacturing technology developed by Lotte Chemical is to improve battery durability by coating functional materials that improve the flow of lithium ions on the lithium metal battery separation membrane.
In particular, investment will be reduced when establishing lithium metal battery production facilities as it can be produced by applying only the manufacturing process of separation membrane coating materials to lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities.
Lotte Chemical said it signed an equity investment and joint research and development (JDA) agreement with US lithium metal cathode material development startup Electronics in 2021 and succeeded in developing the technology after two years of joint research. It is currently conducting technology application tests with lithium metal battery-related companies and universities at home and abroad, and will establish additional partnerships with professional research institutes.
