[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanwha Q CELLS Division (Hanhwa Q CELLS) is going to stop operating its Eumseong plant in Chungbuk. It has decided to reduce its solar module plant in South Korea due to sluggish demand due to a contraction in the domestic solar energy industry.
Hanwha Q CELLS announced on the 29th that it decided to suspend the operation of the Eumseong factory from the 17th of next month. Eumseong Plant is a solar module plant established in 2015 with an annual production capacity of 3.5 gigawatts (GW).
Since the Eumseong plant produces only solar modules, it plans to integrate its domestic production plant into the Jincheon plant in North Chungcheong Province. The Jincheon plant produces both solar cells and modules. With the shutdown of the voice plant, Hanwha Q Cells' domestic module production capacity will be reduced from 6.2GW to 2.7GW.
Hanwha Q CELLS earlier shut down some lines of its voice plant during the third quarter of this year due to reduced demand for solar energy in South Korea. On the 22nd, it announced that it would receive applications for voluntary retirement for 1,800 production workers at the Eumseong and Jincheon plants.
