[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] SES, a U.S. battery company invested by Hyundai Motor Co. and SK Corp., will build an urban air traffic (UAM) battery production facility near Seoul.
In addition, SES will jointly develop next-generation lithium metal batteries, which currently have better capacity than lithium-ion batteries, with global automakers, with one of Hyundai Motor, Honda and General Motors (GM).
SES is a US startup battery company launched in 2012, where Hyundai Motor has invested $ 100 million (about 131.9 billion won) and SK Corp. has invested $ 61 million (about 81.5 billion won).
It is the first time that SES has announced plans to build production facilities related to UAM. SES will announce details such as the timing and location of the investment next year.
With the addition of an UAM-only plant, there will be a total of four SES manufacturing facilities in Korea. Boston-based SES currently has two lines in Shanghai, China, and three lines in Chungju, South Korea.
